Signs of rats infestation in your house
Rat Droppings – Tend to be found concentrated in specific locations as rats produce up to 40 droppings per night. Brown rat droppings are dark brown in a tapered, spindle shape – resembling a large grain of rice.
Scratching Noises – Rats are particular are deft climbers. They can easily gain access into loft spaces and upper floors of buildings, so scratching noises at night may suggest their presence.
Footprints – Rats leave foot and tail marks in dusty, less-used areas of buildings. Shining a strong flashlight at a low angle should reveal tracks clearly. To establish if an infestation is active, sprinkle fine flour or talc along a small stretch of floor near the footprints and check for fresh tracks the next day.
Rub Marks – Rats use established routes along skirting boards and walls due to their poor eyesight. Grease and dirt on their bodies leave smudges and dark marks on both objects and surfaces they repeatedly brush against. These marks may indicate rodent activity, but as smears may remain for a long period of time, they are not a good gauge of an active infestation.
Burrows – Rats are well known for digging extensive burrow systems for shelter, food storage and nesting. They build burrows next to solid objects or structures (decking, garden sheds, garages etc.) and are found in secluded, well vegetated areas such as gardens and wasteland.

- Trash : Like food, left out, unsecured trash is also what attracts mice and rats. Trash is the perfect marriage of two of the things rats and mice need the most: food and shelter. Rodents love trash so much, many large and densely populated cities, and the resulting heaps of trash, faces high rat infestations.
- Food : It is no coincidence that rats are often found near places with abundant food sources. Food is one of the most common reasons a rat or a mouse will enter your home. They need food to thrive and survive and houses have plenty of food sources for them to consume and grow. Your kitchen is one of their most favourite places in the house as it is loaded with food for their consumption. Bread, rice, pasta, cereal, vegetables, chocolate and biscuits. And cheese! And the easier it is for mice to nibble on your food, the more mice you’ll attract.
- Easy entry (Holes) : The reason that your house is a target of a rat infestation could also be because it is very easy for them to gain access. An infestation of rats and mice usually happens because they have found easy entry into your home. Rats and mice can squeeze through even the tiniest of cracks and holes no more than ¼ and ½ of an inch in size. Houses with a lot of cracks, holes, damages and open doors are some of the most common targets of rat infestations in your house and offices.
- Structural damage : Rats can cause serious property damage once they enter an office, house, or apartment. Furthermore, gnawed electrical cords are safety hazards for you, your loved ones and pets. If rodents strip away the insulation along with essential wiring, the chances of an electrical fire sparking will be that much higher.
- Contaminate living space : Rodent droppings are rife with bacteria and germs that spread throughout your living space. Rodent urine, waste, and saliva will inevitably end up on your counter tops, cabinet doors, floors, and beyond. Likewise, the airborne origins of rodents pose a trouble to the well being of everyone in the home. There’s no sense trying to sweep up rodent feces, as doing so will simply stir them up and beget you to breathe in bacteria. The better approach is to prevent rodent infestations and have your home professionally cleaned/treated to ensure it is perfectly safe.
- Rodents leave an Odour : Rodents will change the smell of your home for the worse. If there is a colony of rodents, the odor might become unbearable. If this problem is not addressed, there is a chance the odor will reach the point that your home becomes uninhabitable. Aside from the disgusting smell, rodent infestations can also trigger asthma, cause respiratory issues, and spike allergies. It’s also possible for one or several rodents to come trapped in your home’s walls, garret or other confined spaces, die, and beget quite the unwelcome odor.
